Samsung Galaxy S4 Launching April With S Pen

We caught a glimpse of a Samsung Galaxy S4 concept video earlier this morning, but let’s return from the land of make-believe for a minute to take care of some real Samsung business, shall we? We know many of you, like us, are highly anticipating the reveal and release of the next Samsung Galaxy S device, which may be coming in nearly four months from now and may pack a little surprise if a recent rumor turns out to be true.

According to Korean website Enuri, Samsung plans to launch its Galaxy S4 in April 2013 that sports a 5-inch 1080p AMOLED display, a quad-core Exynos 5440 chip, 13-megapixel rear auto-focus camera and an S Pen, which previously was only made available for Samsung’s Galaxy Note line of smartphones and tablet.

Seeing how Samsung is going to be a total buzzkill and not announce the Galaxy S4 at CES next week, we’ll just need to sit back and wait until they decide to officially unveil their next Galaxy S phone, which if it’s launching in April, may be sometime next Spring.

Facebook For Android 2.0 Aims For Speed

Facebook has just announced its Facebook for Android 2.0 app which is landing in Google Play later today. The new app is now using native code, just like it does on the iOS version which brought a huge speed boost, especially on the new iPhone 5 hardware. This is the same kind of performance increase that we expect for Android devices this afternoon when the update cycle starts.
Although the app should look the same on the surface, there was a lot of coding work and performance analysis that led to this new version 2.0 (more info on that). This is the biggest change in Facebook for Android since it was first released, and the good news is that Facebook should be able to rely on this foundation for a while, so expect the next release to be more about functionality than performance.
This is great news for Android users who may have grown frustrated by the slow performance of the Facebook app for Android. This was the #1 issue with this app from what I can tell. We’ll see if the release lives up to the expectations, but I’m pretty optimistic, and we’ll know for sure in a few hours. My Galaxy Note 2 cannot wait one more second to get this one.

RIM announces Android Port-A-Thon for January 2013

We know that RIM’s CMO promised that Blackberry 10 would launch with at least 70,000 apps, although with RIM recently announcing their Android Port-A-Thon, we’re guessing that some of those 70,000 apps will be apps ported over from Google’s Android platform. That’s not a bad thing though because Android numbers more than half a million apps the last time we checked, and if more popular Android apps get ported onto Blackberry 10, the more people might be willing to check out RIM’s latest mobile operating system.

RIM has announced that the Android Port-A-Thon will be taking place on the 11th of January 2013, and it seems that they are eager to reward developers with make successful ports. According to their website (source link below), a successfully ported and approved app will net the developer $100 with a maximum of 20 apps per vendor. Developers who submit apps will also be eligible to participate in drawing in which they will be able to win a Dev Alpha device. For interested developers, hit up the source link below for the details, and for the layman what this means is that (hopefully) by the time Blackberry 10 launches, there will be a ton of cool apps you will be able to check out.

Christmas Day 2012 Becomes Record-Breaking For Tablet, Smartphone Activations

It shouldn’t be a surprise by now that mobile devices, including tablets, have been seen as the perfect gift to give to family, friends and loved ones during the holiday season. Every year, there’s an increase in iOS and Android devices activated on Christmas Day, but this year broke records as there were more iOS and Android devices activated in history.

A report published by analytics firm Flurry took iOS and Android device activations from December 1st to the 20th and compared that data to activations of those devices on Christmas Day. Between December 1st and December 20th, four million iOS and Android devices were activated a day. On December 25th, a whopping 17.4 million devices were activated, which is a 332% increase. The previous record was set last year at 6.8 million activations, which was easily doubled this year.

Tablets also seems to have been the gift of choice this year as 51% of iOS and Android activations were tablets with the other 49% giving smartphones for Christmas. It’s good to know the tablet my grandmother received this Christmas Day has influenced Flurry’s statistics, even though she’s currently only using the thing to play Slotomania.

Apple drops Galaxy S III mini from patent case

More news today from the ongoing legal tussle between Apple and Samsung. Reuters reports that 1 Infinite Loop's lawyers have withdrawn the Galaxy S III mini handset from the company's ongoing patent infringement case against Samsung. The device was added to the lawsuitjust last month.
The decision stemmed from the fact that the Galaxy S III mini isn't available in the US and isn't likely to be sold here. Samsung had previously argued as much in asking that the phone be kept out of the lawsuit. It was initially added along with the Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet and Android Jelly Bean OS. Although it wasn't officially available in the US, Apple's lawyers argued that the Galaxy S III mini should be included because they were able to purchase one through Amazon and have it delivered here.

Production lines running through Chinese New Year to meet iPad mini demand

As you celebrate this holiday season with a game of Angry Birds Star Wars on that new iPad mini, take a moment to consider the workers in China who are about to forego their traditional two-week Chinese New Year break. According to United Daily, at least two of Apple's suppliers in the country are planning to run their production lines right through the holiday to meet Chinese demand for the iPhone 5 and iPad mini.

Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. Ltd. will run at least some of its lines, while Flexium Interconnect, which makes Apple's printed circuit boards, is keeping its factory in Kunshan, Jiangsu Province open with the help of students.

While it appears that iPhone 5 supply has finally met demand in the US, the iPad mini continues to be hard to find here despite ship times from Apple's online store shrinking to one week earlier this month.

New tablet owners share Christmas tweets, iPad on top

Anecdotal evidence from Twitter suggests there were a lot of new iPads under the Christmas tree. According to a graphic spotted by Andy Baio, the number of people proclaiming this is my "First tweet from my iPad" eclipses those tweeting for the first time from their Kindle Fire, Nexus 7 or Surface tablet. There's no source for the data, so we can't confirm that its accurate. If it is true, the iPad was the gift to give and receive this holiday season.

Shirtless photo a "joke," says FBI agent who began Petraeus inquiry

WASHINGTON/NEW YORK (Reuters) - The FBI agent who began the investigation that led David Petraeus to resign as CIA director said that a shirtless photo he sent to a woman at the center of the probe was a "joke" sent to many friends, and was not meant to be sexual.

Frederick Humphries told the Seattle Times in an interview published Thursday that the photo in the unfolding adultery scandal that brought down Petraeus was sent to Tampa, Florida, socialite Jill Kelley in 2010.

Humphries, who has been identified in media reports on the scandal mainly as the "shirtless" FBI agent, was a "top-notch" operative, according to a prosecutor who worked with him on the "millennium bomber" case years ago.

Andrew Hamilton, now a senior deputy prosecutor for King County, Washington, said Humphries was assigned to the case partly because he spoke excellent French. Ahmed Ressam, who was convicted of plotting to bomb the Los Angeles International Airport on New Year's Eve 1999, claimed to be from Quebec and spoke French.

"That's the first time I met him, as a case agent," Hamilton told Reuters. "We spent a lot of time together over the next couple years getting ready for trial, and I couldn't have asked for more as a case agent. He was very, very thorough, and very honest. We always thought we were very lucky to have him."

Five months ago, Kelley ignited the FBI investigation that led to Petraeus when she asked Humphries whether the bureau could look into harassing emails she had been receiving.

The investigation eventually revealed that the emails to Kelley were sent by Paula Broadwell, an Army reserve officer in military intelligence and co-author of a biography of Petraeus.

The FBI investigation revealed Broadwell's affair with Petraeus, who cited the relationship when he resigned as CIA chief last week. The probe also ensnared General John Allen, the commander of NATO forces in Afghanistan, whom agents found had exchanged "flirtatious" emails with Kelley, law enforcement officials said.

Girls, guns and yoga: John McAfee's odd life in "pirate haven"

SAN PEDRO, Belize (Reuters) - To the many people who crossed his path on a tropical island in Belize, it was apparent John McAfee's life had taken some bizarre turns in the past few years.

The anti-virus software guru, who started McAfee Associates in 1989, has been in hiding since police said they wanted to question him about the weekend murder of his neighbor, fellow American Gregory Faull, with whom McAfee had quarreled.

Despite his disappearance, McAfee, 67, has remained in contact with the media, providing a stream of colorful bulletins over his predicament, state of mind and his claim that Belize's authorities want to kill him.

Residents of the Caribbean island of Ambergris Caye and others who know him paint the picture of an eccentric, impulsive man who gave up a career as a successful entrepreneur in the United States for a life of semi-seclusion in the former pirate haven of Belize, surrounded by bodyguards and young women.

"Never mind the dog, beware of owner," counsels a small sign, embellished with a sketched hand gripping a large pistol, tacked to the fence separating McAfee's beachfront swimming pool from the pier that cuts into the azure sea.

McAfee, a yoga fan who has lived on the island for about four years, often moves around with bodyguards, wearing pistols in his belt. Since going into hiding, he has compared his lot to that of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, who is battling extradition from Britain from inside the Ecuadorean Embassy.

Officials suspect McAfee used designer drugs, and neighbors say he tried to chase them off the public beach in front of his house. Inside his home, a blue-roofed cottage complex, he kept a small arsenal of shotguns and scope-fitted rifles.

There were also complaints about the millionaire's numerous and noisy dogs. Officials say the poisoning of four of the dogs may be linked to the murder of Faull, a 52-year-old Florida building contractor who was shot dead at his salmon-hued two-story villa about 100 yards (meters) down the beach from McAfee.

Faull was one of the locals who had complained about McAfee's attitude and his dogs.

McAfee told Wired magazine, with whom he first kept up a running conversation, that he was disguised and holed up in what he describes as a lice-infested refuge. In comments to the magazine, McAfee denied he shot Faull and said he fears that the police will kill or torture him. Police, who believe he is still in Belize, say they just want to talk to him about the killing.

McAfee, who has not responded to requests for comment by Reuters, blamed Belize's "pirate culture" for his troubles in an essay Wired said he had sent to the magazine.

"Belize is still a pirate haven and is run more or less along the lines established centuries ago by the likes of Captain Morgan, Blackbeard and Captain Barrow," McAfee said.

Belize Prime Minister Dean Barrow has urged McAfee to help police with their inquiries, calling him "bonkers."

In an interview with CNBC television by phone on Friday, McAfee said he would not seek refuge in the U.S. Embassy.

"What would happen? They will offer me either sanctuary where I will spend my days living in the embassy like poor Julian Assange or when I leave ... I will be nabbed by the police. My ultimate goal is they'll figure out who killed the man, it will have nothing to do with me and they will leave me alone. Or if enough international pressure is applied," he said.

'PARANOID'

Many locals in San Pedro describe the tattooed McAfee, who made a fortune developing the Internet anti-virus software that bears his name, as a generous but unstable man.

"He's a good guy, he helped a lot of people. The problem was when he wanted something he wanted it right now. And when he didn't get it, he'd get paranoid," said one islander, a former McAfee employee, who like many people here spoke on condition their name not be used for fear of retribution.

"He's a complex man, very impulsive," the islander added.

Doug Singh, Belize's former police minister, told Reuters he was at a loss to explain McAfee's recent comments.

"Mr. McAfee seems to have a bit of a divorce from reality and it seems to be consistent in his behavior and some of the things he has said recently. He's way out of line and out of proportion. Nobody has anything against Mr. McAfee," Singh said.

After making millions with his anti-virus product, McAfee decided to abandon the United States for Belize, a languid coastal paradise. It is a path that has been taken by a number of rich Americans over the years.

He took a beachfront compound on the island's isolated and exclusive north side, 6 miles from the town of San Pedro by boat or by driving over badly cratered asphalt and dirt track. It is a world away from California's Silicon Valley, which he once called home.

He took the company public in 1992 and left two years later following accusations that he had hyped the arrival of a virus known as Michelangelo, which turned out to be a dud, to scare computer users into buying his company's products.

Officials at the company he created and its parent, Intel, have declined to comment on the controversy.

But one long-time McAfee manager who recently left said company executives were likely monitoring the news closely. He said they have tracked reports of John McAfee's activities over the years out of concern they might need to do damage control.

A case is already pending in Belize against McAfee for possession of illegal firearms, and police previously suspected him of running a lab to make illicit synthetic drugs.

But McAfee said this week he was opposed to drugs.

"My life is f----d up enough without drugs, and always has been," McAfee told Wired magazine.

BENEFACTOR

For all his trouble with authorities, McAfee has worked hard to be the island's benefactor. Upon arriving in Belize he bought a $1 million boat for the country's new coast guard, and donated equipment to the local police force, according to local reports.

He tipped generously everywhere he went, and hired a steady stream of taxis for frequent female guests on the $150 round trip from the small airstrip in San Pedro out to his house.

"Not two or three, a lot of women," said Artemio Awayo, 24, a local waiter. "Every time I saw him it was a different woman."

Those who knew him said he didn't drink and never hung out at the island's many bars. But employees at a restaurant near the pier where McAfee's water taxi company is based said his actions grew more bizarre following a police raid last April on his mainland hacienda outside the town of Orange Walk.

Even for casual lunches, McAfee began regularly coming to town with at least two bodyguards, clad in camouflage and each packing pistols, they said.

"Generally, you don't need a bodyguard in Belize," said Jorge Alana, a San Pedro Sun reporter who interviewed McAfee several times, noting top elected officials don't have them. "It does call attention when you move with so many guards."

McAfee's home is in a stretch of Ambergris where the wealthiest foreigners hole up. Raw lots of land 100 feet by 200 feet can cost up to $500,000 here. Even modest-looking houses reflect multimillion-dollar investments.

On Thursday afternoon, a 23-year-old calling herself Tiffany used a key to enter McAfee's home with another young woman and said he had spent Saturday night with them - around the time police said Faull's murder took place.

They had not spoken to McAfee since Sunday, she said.

On Friday, an outside light was still on at his beachfront complex, and a dog roamed freely around the grounds.

Like McAfee, many of his north shore neighbors tend to favor being left alone, rarely coming to town and loath to mix with tourists.

"That's why they come to San Pedro," said Daniel Guerrero, the tour guide and real estate broker now serving as the town's mayor. "They like the quietness. They like the isolation."

But even fishing, scuba diving and sunset daiquiris can get tiresome. Accustomed to hard work and achievement, newcomers established and kept up the island's charities, locals say. Quite a few foreigners, like McAfee, started local businesses. And some fall out of synch with local culture.

"It's one thing to vacation here and another thing living here," said Wyoming native Tamara Sniffin, owner and editor of the San Pedro Sun, the local newspaper.

Immortalized in song by Madonna as La Isla Bonita, Ambergris Caye stretches 27 miles along the blue Caribbean below the Mexican border, flanking the world's second-largest barrier reef and some of its finest sport fishing waters.

Those attributes have attracted well-heeled foreign retirees and celebrities such as actor Leonardo DiCaprio, who owns a small island nearby.

"Here it's just party, party, work, party," said Iris Mavel, 27, a waitress at a restaurant favored by McAfee. "A lot of couples who come here leave divorced. That's why they call it Temptation Island."

The island also has a darker side. Dumped at sea and carried ashore by the tides, bundles of Colombian cocaine flow through the island not far from McAfee's house and on, many say, toward the Mexican border. Cocaine not recovered by the smugglers is collected by islanders, supplying a thriving local drug market that has sparked low-level gang feuds and occasional killings.

International fugitives have taken refuge here. In the summer, a Slovak man accused of murdering a woman, her 10-year-old son and a gangster in his home country was arrested on an international warrant, processed for extradition but then released by a Belizean judge.

Some townsfolk suspect McAfee is hiding on a yacht off of San Pedro. Others note that Mexico is only an hour away by the sort of fast boat McAfee owns and that passports are never checked for people landing in the oceanfront villages there.

San Pedro's mayor believes he will surface.

"I have the feeling that this guy will turn up," Guerrero said. "But he'll turn up with his attorneys. He's a big guy."

Zophone i5, another iPhone 5 clone

Fancy the awesome looking iPhone 5 but cannot buy it because of its high selling price or because you just hate iOS 6? Well, there are a lot of options for you if you are willing for a China made smart phone. Yes, we are talking about another iPhone 5 clone from a Chinese manufacturer. A few days back, I wrote about the Goophone iPad Mini clone, the Goopad Mini, which was a perfect replica of the newly announced 7.9 inch iPad Mini. The same company, Goophone, has an iPhone 5 clone as well, known as the Goophone i5. And today, we are going to have a look at the Zophone i5, which is said to be one of the most iPhone 5 clones to hit the market.
The Zophone i5 has managed to replicate a lot of features of the iPhone 5, including the awesome 4 inch display with the same resolution of 1, 136 x 640 pixels. Not just this, the company has proved itself very capable by developing a Siri clone for the phone as well. If you think it could never duplicate the Lightning adopter that the Cupertino tech giant boasts about so much, you are wrong. The Zophone i5 has a Lightning port as well.
The Zophone i5 runs on a 1.2 GHz dual core Mediatek MT6577 processor. It features 1 GB of RAM and 4 GB of on board memory. So you are not going to get 8 GB, 16 GB, and 64 GB variants. But the smart phone clone does give you the option to expand the on board storage with an external microSD card. The Zophone i5 features an 8 mega pixel camera on the back, and there is also a front facing camera (VGA I guess). To power up all these, the phone comes with a 1, 400 mAh battery. And you are going to miss the EarPods, as this just comes with normal earbuds. All this with the power of the Android operating system running on it. Yes.
The Zophone i5 is going to sell for just $200 in China. The international availability of this iPhone 5 clone is a doubt. So you will have to either import it, or fly to China and get one yourself. It still surprises me that in China, iPhone 5 clones started coming out to the market even before the official launch of the iPhone 5.

iPhone 5 16 GB Factory Unlocked to cost $649

If you have been waiting for the factory unlocked iPhone 5 to come to the market, your wait seems to be coming to an end soon. This is because a new report on Apple Insider has a screenshot from the official US Apple online store which lists the factory unlocked iPhone 5. Apple Insider reports that over the weekend, when the online publication tried the search string “iPhone 5 factory unlocked” on the US Apple online store, and got the prices for the respective models.

The prices for these factory unlocked iPhone 5 smart phones remain the same as the prices for the factory unlocked iPhone 4S smart phones. You can get the 16 GB model for $649, the 32 GB model for $749, and the 64 GB model for $849. In some countries, the Cupertino tech giant releases the factory unlocked version of the iPhones soon after the release of the wireless carrier locked version of the smart phone. But in the United States, that is not the case. In the United States, there will be a delay of at least 6 weeks between the release of the carrier locked iPhone and the factory unlocked iPhone.

For example, the wireless carrier locked iPhone 4S was launched in early October. The pre orders for the factory unlocked version of the iPhone 4S started in early November. And the shipping of these factory unlocked iPhone 4S smart phones did not start until the third week of November, which is exactly 6 weeks after the launch of the carrier locked iPhone 4S.

Now, we are well into 6 weeks after the release of the wireless carrier locked iPhone 5. So we can expect the Cupertino tech giant to start taking pre orders for the factory unlocked version of the iPhone 5

Apple Spends 2 Percent in Overseas Tax Spending

The top executives at Apple has once again showcased their knack at avoiding the punitive hands of the tax collector after the Silicon Valley-based tech company reported a 2 percent tax spending for the chunk of money generated by the sales of their products overseas in the last fiscal year.

According to its annual report filed with the U.S Securities and Exchange Commission, Apple only shelled out $713 million in taxes on $26.87 billion in foreign profits.

On the other hand, the iPhone maker spent a whopping $12.26 billion in federal taxes and $1.06 billion in state taxes for the profits they earned in the United States.

Apple’s growing business empire was attributed to its engaging line of innovative products and tax strategies overseas.

Like many multi-national conglomerates, Apple is racking up the large portion of their profit money from the sales of their products abroad, where tax policies are lax and favorable for their business.

However, these profits tend to stay overseas as companies tried to avoid an onerous 35 percent tax rate if they decided to ‘repatriate’ their money obtained in foreign lands back to the United States.  Several companies such as Cisco Systems have previously asked for tax relief for the repatriation of their overseas profits.

Despite spending an incredibly cheap amount of money for their overseas taxes, Apple has not utilized any loopholes just to prevent paying lucrative taxes.

Instead, the company’s top executives used their smarts to capitalize on the slack tax regulations abroad, giving them the leverage to spend less out of their enormous profits.

“These technology giants are playing by the rules, but the problem is the rules are broken. Who sets the rules? The government. And yet the government all but takes it out on the individual taxpayer by making them drag the country out of economic downturn kicking and screaming,” said ZDNet’s Zack Whittaker.

With the competition in the U.S tech market increasingly becomes tighter than ever, Apple will not stop at tapping all possible options to capitalize on the profit opportunities at tax-friendly countries such as China and India.

Microsoft Outspends Apple In Research And Development

While Apple may be spending a lot of money on research and development, Microsoft may just be outdoing the Cupterino-based company. In fact, they are shelling out three times as much as Apple is. Redmond-based company is forking out a whopping $9.8 billion compared to Apple’s $3.4 billion. Turns out, Apple isn’t doing a whole lot compared to Microsoft. Of course, you do have to keep in mind that they are fundamentally two different companies. With one concentrating on mostly software and services and the other trying to produce a lot of hardware with a little software on the side, you could say that the comparisons don’t really matter. Still, do you think that dumping a bunch of money into research and development will always lead to financial performance into the ever-expanding market?

Really, the answer is pretty open for debate, and at some point, we should be seeing some diminishing returns. Nevertheless, it is pretty interesting that Apple ended up spending a billion dollars more than what they have in the previous years. This makes it the largest increase ever for research and development work in Apple’s history to this date. As you probably know, this is a very stark contrast when put against what Steve Jobs mentioned in the past when he was asked on the amount of consumer research that went into the making of the iPad. He mentioned that it wasn’t the consumers’ job to know what they wanted.

Nevertheless, it is very interesting that Apple has put an extra billion in this years research and development. Although, Microsoft is outdoing them big time int that area.

iMessage still has performance issues

If you are an iMessage, iCloud, Face Time, or Game Centre user, you would have experienced the outage a few times in the last month, and the last week as well. There have been two outages recently, which have left the users very frustrated. The Cupertino tech giant is not having a good time after it released the iOS 6 operating system. First it was it with the new Maps apps, and now the iMessages, Face Time, and Game Centre. Wired puts forward a couple of the tweets from iMessage users:

“I hate when my iMessage decides to not work and my texts send as actual text messages #annoying,” disgruntled user @KellyTurner tweeted last week. Another user, @adamtheteen, echoed that sentiment in the midst of the second bout of iMessage downtime this week: “I hate when iMessage just randomly stops working.”

According to Apple’s latest stats, there are 140 million iMessage users worldwide, and they are sending 28,000 iMessages every second. That is very clearly a very big number, and the company needs to have enough infrastructure to support such cloud service. On October 25th, Face Time and iMessages were down, leaving users angered. Again, Tuesday afternoon, most of the iCloud services were down, including iMessage, Face Time, and Game Centre. Users were obviously very enraged. Gartner analyst Brian Blau told the following to Wired via email:

While I don’t believe these are serious, it’s not typical of Apple to have these types of system issues. You would expect that Apple would address the problems immediately, and if we see more outages, then Apple should at least let users know the source of the problems.

Wireless carriers are helpless in resolving these issues. Wired says that both AT&T and Verizon referred to Apple when it asked about these outages. And Apple usually does not address such issues. Apple really needs to fix a lot of issues pertaining to its iOS 6 based services, for its customers to be happy to pay again next year for the new piece of hardware it will release.

LTE iPhone 5 coming to EE and Three in UK, but not O2 and Vodafone

Brits ready to stake their preorder claim this Friday might have a harder time deciding between the myriad of networks offering the device. While all of the major UK carriers will be ready to offer you the iPhone 5, that LTE radio will only be working on the newly-christened EE from the start, with Three likely to use that purchased spectrum (after getting the okay from Ofcom) to similar effect in the near-future. Unfortunately for Vodafone and O2, the forthcoming Ofcom spectrum auction is gearing up to sell off the 800MHz (Band 20) and 2.6GHz (Band 7) frequencies -- neither of which are found on Apple's multiple iPhone 5 models, and the latter being a bigger problem in Europe and Asia, where LTE networks already make use of the 2.6GHz frequency. However, Apple have followed up an initial phone launch with additional network-specific models before -- so there's a slim chance we could see another model at a later date. All the UK carriers are keeping their contract prices a tightly-guarded secret at the moment, but we'll update as soon as we hear more. Meanwhile, those on that little European isle can expect to pay £529 for the entry-level iPhone 5 from the source when pre-orders start this Friday.

· Rich Notifications: Notifications can now expand and shrink with a pinch to show the right amount of information a user needs. Notifications have been enhanced so action can be taken without having to launch the app first – like sharing a screenshot directly from the notification.
· Automatic Widget Adjustment: Customizing the home screen is easier than ever before. Users can simply place a new icon or widget on the screen, and existing icons will move out of the way to make space. When widgets are too big, they automatically resize to fit on the screen.

In addition to the operating system update, Samsung and ESPN worked together to integrate AllShare® technology into ESPN's popular ScoreCenter® application. This means Galaxy S III owners will now be able to wirelessly push on-demand ESPN global sports coverage and highlights from the ESPN ScoreCenter app to their Samsung SMART TV™. When on the same Wi-Fi network as a Samsung SMART TV, a sharing icon will appear within the ScoreCenter video player which allows users to seamlessly push what they are watching to the TV. The ScoreCenter app with AllShare integration is available today for download through S Suggest™ on all U.S. Galaxy S III devices.

With the Jelly Bean update, the Galaxy S III will also add support for some exciting new accessory experiences.
· AllShare® Cast Wireless Hub: The AllShare Cast Wireless Hub accessory allows users to wirelessly mirror their phone screen to any HDTV or HDMI® display. Whether it's sharing pictures, browsing the Web, playing games, streaming music, watching videos or projecting business presentations, users can control the action on the big screen wirelessly from their smartphone. AllShare Cast Wireless Hub even supports licensed content playback of premium TV and movies.
· NFC One Touch Pairing Support: Galaxy S III can now pair with supporting NFC Bluetooth® accessories in a single touch. The Samsung Galaxy HM3300 Bluetooth headset will be the first Samsung portfolio accessory to support this functionality (available in the near future), allowing users to pair their headset by touching it to the back of their device.

Facebook opens mobile ads for apps to all developers, keeps them on the money train

It's no secret that Facebook saw FarmVille for iOS as writing on the wall: it had to either tap into mobile app revenue or risk losing income (and marketing-savvy developers) whenever someone left the web. Following a beta this summer, the company's solution to its dilemma is now open to everyone. All developers on the social network can build ads that link from Facebook's Android and iOS apps to either Google Play or the App Store -- offering both an easy plug for their native apps and that all-important ad revenue for Facebook. The system currently takes a shotgun approach and may pitch social networkers for apps they already have or don't want, but it should be refined in the next few months to where some curious purchasers won't even have to leave Facebook to load that hot new title. Hopefully the increased recognition for mobile developers is worth sullying our once pristine news feeds.

Motorola Atrix 2 — How To Print From The Device

Motorola just recently updated their Atrix 2 handset to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. With the update we got a slew of new features such as App Locker and Smart Actions. Among those new features is a certain one embedded in the system settings. Yes, we Atrix 2 users can now enable a printer on our devices. To access this feature you need to go into the Settings of the Atrix 2, scroll all the way down, and under the System Settings, you will find the Printer settings. Before enabling your printer on your Atrix 2, keep in mind that you won’t be able to do any print over your mobile data, you have to connect to your home Wi-Fi, the same Wi-Fi that your printer is connected to.
What your going to do, is select the Printer Settings, and then select the “Find Printers” button under the auto search tab. It will prompt you to connect to your home Wi-Fi, and after you do that, it will auto search for printers that are connected to that Wi-Fi connection. If your phone can not find a printer on the Wi-Fi, there are some other options to add the printer manually as well. This, of course, still requires you to be on the home Wi-Fi as well, but is a tad more complicated than the auto search. I was able to add my printer straight through the auto search, so things were very simple for me, but maybe your Wi-Fi is a bit more locked up, and it just isn’t liking your handset. In that case, manually adding the printer will have to be the way you go.
If everything else fails, you may have an issue with your printer or it is just not fully open to your Wi-Fi network. When it comes to that, I am no network genius/guru, so you may need to call someone about that. In fact, Motorola Mobility has a support area where they usually are more than willing to help you set up your printer on your Wi-Fi network. On the other hand, these Printer Settings options should be available for most devices running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, mainly their newer devices like the DROID RAZR M.
Now, I do have to warn you that their built-in printer software is actually really weird. Sometimes it just outright refuses to print for some unknown reason. Usually a reset of your phone fixes this, but Motorola really needs to add a bit more stability to the option before it becomes the main place you print from. Still, it is wonderful when the printer options do work, especially when you find something that you would like to read later on whilst browsing the web. Sure you can always bookmark things, but those are a bit more tedious on your smartphone, so printing would be the ideal thing to do.
Has the printer options been working well for you, or are they a bit clunky as I described? Let me know in the comments below!

Meet G’zOne TYPE-L; A Military Standard Ruggedized Android Smartphone from Casio

It’s no secret that Android is the most dominant operating system in the smartphone and one of the reasons is that so many manufacturers have designed and developed all kinds of smartphones – from low end budget smartphones to high performance quad core phones, from small 3.5 inch screen phones to large 5.5 inch phablets.  Well, if you love Android and would wish to have a phone that can take all forms of beatings and abuse, Casio may have released just the kind of phone you want.

The Casio G’zOne TYPE-L is a military-grade ruggedized phone that is incredibly durable but still has some very impressive specs including a 1.5 GHz Qualcomm dual core processor, 1 GB of RAM and an 8 megapixels camera.  Casio is working on making the phone available in the market around February next year and will be available in red or black.  You would expect such a phone to be prohibitively expensive but Casio actually targets to introduce the phone in Japan in January for under $400 US equivalent.  They have not mentioned anything about rolling out the phone to other countries but such a gadget, being one of the few that are unique in the world, would certainly attract a fair market share.
The Casio G’zOne TYPE-L sports a 4 inch IPS display with a low resolution of 800 x 480 pixels and will have 8 GB onboard memory but with a microSD card slot that can support up to 32 GB extended memory.  It will also come with the standard mid-range smartphone features including WiFi, 3G and 4G, Bluetooth, GPS and a 1.3 megapixels front camera.  The phone is designed to be waterproof, dustproof and has a shock-resistant construction to protect it against drops even on hard surfaces.
Well, if you are the outdoors type, or if for some reason you have developed a habit of dropping your phones to their death and need a shockproof gadget, this may be just what you are after.  Casio is teaming up with NEC to bring this great phone, we just have to wait and see if it will be made available in the US and the international market because it looks like a phone I would carry to an adventure or rock climbing.

Speculations on the Specs and Features of the iPad Mini

Apple has sent out media invites for a special event they will be hosting on October 23rd, an even we all know by now the company will be launching a smaller version of the iPad tablet, iPad mini.  There have been rumors for months now that Apple has been working on the smaller tablet and it appeared to be a silly idea at first until the rumors became more prevalent and even more realistic.  The success of Google’s 7 inch nexus tablet has proven that mini tablets have a place in the market, but knowing Apple’s history on market strategy and pricing structure, will the iPad mini be as successful as the parent iPad?  I guess it’s all about the specs and how the company markets it.
What will the mini offer to apple fanatics?  Well, there have been speculations going around about a better display, more solid build and a thinner tablet but considering design limitations, are these possible.  We will look at some of the anticipated features (realistic) in order to know whether the mini will be a threat to the various Android mini tablets on the market now.

a)      3G and 4G LTE on all versions
When Apple released the iPad and later iPad 2, some models were without 3G.  But this is understandable since users would typically connect the tablet to the internet via WiFi because it is a pretty big tablet.  The Mini is much smaller and more portable and users would use it more than they do the larger version and 3G and 4G for all the tablets would be something every user who intends to get it looks forward to.  How important do you think the 3G and 4G connectivity option is for the iPad Mini?
b)     High res camera
Let’s face it, Apple did not consider a high res camera on a iPad and iPad 2 of any consequence, but the recent influx of amazing Android tablets have almost made the high resolution camera or the secondary camera on a tablet almost a necessity for all tablets.  Well, the Nexus 7 has no rear camera and we all wish it had, but is there any chance Apple will include at least a 5MP camera on their new mini tab?  iPhone 5 came with an 8 megapixels camera which going by the many reviews by independent tech geeks is quite impressive.  Apple fans should not raise their hopes too high but it would be a sweet surprise if the iPad mini actually came with a secondary camera.
c)      Absence of some iPad 2 features
Apple intends to keep the larger iPad alive even after the launch of the mini, and for this to happen, users have to have clear reasons to go for either or both the iPad 2 and the iPad mini.  The best way to do this is have features on the larger iPad that the mini doesn’t have and some on the iPad mini that are missing on the larger iPad.  But what features can the mini have that the larger iPad doesn’t besides camera?  Try 4G LTE, a higher resolution camera, maybe there is a surprise coming that will blow our minds?  Well, there must be something different in the mini, we just can’t tell what.
d)     Lightning connector
Apple launched their new, smaller lightning connector port that replaces the older wider one and we are pretty sure the iPad mini will have the new connector.  The iPhone 5 has it, iPod Nano and iPod touch has it and it appears all iOS devices from now on will have this improved but smaller connector.  This is a great feature for the iPad mini considering that size is a major issue in its design.  The larger iPads lack this but it certainly helps the device appearance.
e)      Educational approach?
Apple has put a lot of effort in education over the last couple of months, but although there have been educational-themed iPads in New York, the company has not actually released a device that actually targets the education sector.  The mini would be a perfect gadget to push this agenda – they could have a version dedicated to education that could come at a lower price and have a ton of educational applications.
f)       Better display?
The iPad mini will have a smaller screen than the larger iPad.  It is expected that it will feature a 7 inch screen but nothing besides the size is a certain speculation.  However, with the company’s development of display technology which was showcased in their iPhone 5, I wouldn’t be surprised if the iPad mini has a display resolution close to or the same as that of iPad 2.  iPad 2’s 1024 x 768 pixels resolution is achievable even with a smaller 7 inch tablet but some geeks say that Apple’s iPad mini may end up way larger than the standard mini tablet – it could have a 7.8 inch screen just to accommodate a higher resolution display.  The mini tablet will certainly boast of a Retina display and this means that the capability of the new iPad mini will outshine the larger iPad’s.
Finally, Apple will make a kill off the iPad mini depending on how they price the mini-tablet.  It is difficult to put a figure on the estimate price but even apple fans know this has never been the company’s strategy.

iOS-like notifications coming to iCloud web apps

With the release of the new iPhone 5 and the accompanying new operating system, iOS 6, Apple is working to make the overall user experience iOS-like. In the new iOS 6, we have seen a lot of iCloud integration. The new photo sharing service with “like” and “comments” like those on Facebook, the Cuperitno based tech giant is working hard on combining social network, mobile telephony, business, and personal lives together, giving one unified service to its customers.
In an attempt to make this happen, the company has now updated the web apps on its iCloud service to reflect the look and feel iOS, its mobile operating system found on all of its post PC devices.
If you have an iCloud account, which you certainly will if you have an iPad or an iPhone, you will now be able to see the changes when you access it from a browser. There is a new notifications bar just like the one in iOS which will alert you of new incoming notification, be it a new email, event reminder, or the like.
The little badges on app icons indicating the number of notifications on that particular app is nothing new to us. We have seen such badges from the very first version of the operating system. Now though, the company has taken it a step further and has brought the same notification system to the iCloud web apps as well.
Now, you will see those badges indicating the number of unread emails, or the number of meetings you have scheduled for today, etc., even in the web interface. Well, how do you get those? Simple, just keep a tab or a window of your browser open with the iCloud website loaded and signed in. Keeping the window open is necessary to get these real time notifications. If you call this a drawback of the service, most real time browser based web apps also require to be kept open for real time notifications to work. So you will just have to get used to it.

More than 130 escape from Mexican prison on U.S. border

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - More than 130 inmates escaped through a tunnel from a Mexican prison on the border with the United States in one of the worst jailbreaks the country's beleaguered penal system has suffered in recent years.
Homero Ramos, attorney general of the northern state of Coahuila, said 132 inmates of the prison in the city of Piedras Negras had got out through the tunnel in an old carpentry workshop, then cut the wire surrounding the complex.
Corrupt prison officials may have helped the inmates escape, said Jorge Luis Moran, chief of public security in Coahuila, adding that U.S. authorities had been alerted to help capture the fugitives if they try to cross the border.
The jailbreak is a reminder of the challenges that await Enrique Pena Nieto, the incoming president, who has pledged to reduce crime in the country after six years of increased gang-related violence under President Felipe Calderon.
Many of Mexico's prisons are overcrowded and struggle to counter the influence of criminal gangs that can use their financial muscle to corrupt those in charge.
Ramos said that the state government of Coahuila was offering a reward of 200,000 pesos ($15,700) for information leading to the capture of each fugitive.
The Piedras Negras complex housed a total of 734 inmates, and the tunnel through which the prisoners escaped was about 1.2 meters (four feet) wide, 2.9 meters (9-1/2 feet) deep and seven meters (23 feet) long, Ramos said.
MASS BREAKOUTS
There have been numerous mass breakouts in the last few years from Mexico's penal system, and prison officials are frequently accused of complicity with drug cartels.
At the end of 2010, more than 140 inmates escaped a prison in the border city of Nuevo Laredo. This February, at least 44 people died in a fight between rival gangs at an overcrowded prison in northern Mexico.
Pena Nieto has pledged to reform the prisons, though experts say he will struggle to make an impact unless he combines this with root-and-branch reform of the justice system.
Pena Nieto, 46, of the centrist Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), will take office in December. The PRI was widely accused of corruption during its long rule between 1929-2000, and he has promised to break with that checkered past.
Northern Mexico has been hit particularly hard by violence stemming from brutal turf wars between drug gangs that have overshadowed Calderon's conservative administration.
Calderon has used the military to try and crack down on the gangs, and has captured or killed many of the top drug lords.
But his efforts have come at a price.
Gang-related violence has surged on Calderon's watch, and fighting between cartels and their clashes with security forces have claimed more than 55,000 lives over the past six years.
Last week the Mexican Navy captured one of the biggest kingpins active near the U.S.-Mexican border, the leader of the Gulf Cartel, Jorge Costilla, known as "El Coss.
Analysts forecast this would lead to an increase in criminal activity in northern Mexico as rival gangs fought for control of lucrative smuggling routes in the area. New dark energy telescope snaps first cosmic photos

A new telescope camera in Chile focused on mysterious dark energy has taken its first photos of extremely distant galaxies.
The images represent the first observations — called "first light" — of an instrument called the Dark Energy Camera that was eight years in the works.
"The achievement of first light through the Dark Energy Camera begins a significant new era in our exploration of the cosmic frontier," James Siegrist, associate director of science for high energy physics at the U.S. Department of Energy, said in a statement. "The results of this survey will bring us closer to understanding the mystery of dark energy, and what it means for the universe."
Scientists think dark energy makes up 74 percent of the universe, yet they have very little idea what it is. For now, it is the name given to the force that's counteracting gravity, causing the expansion of the universe to accelerate. [Photos: Dark Energy Camera]
The Dark Energy Camera is designed to study this puzzle by mapping out the distant universe to more accurate pin down its current and past expansion rates.
"The Dark Energy Survey will help us understand why the expansion of the universe is accelerating, rather than slowing due to gravity," said Brenna Flaugher, project manager and scientist at Fermilab. "It is extremely satisfying to see the efforts of all the people involved in this project finally come together."
The new instrument — a 570-megapixel camera — took its first photos on Sept. 12, taking aim at a portion of the southern sky from atop a mountain in the Chilean Andes. The Dark Energy Camera was built at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) in Batavia, Ill., and was installed on the Victor M. Blanco telescope at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory, the southern branch of the U.S. National Optical Astronomy Observatory (NOAO).
Each photo by the camera can capture up to 100,000 galaxies as far away as 8 billion light-years.
"We're very excited to bring the Dark Energy Camera online and make it available for the astronomical community through NOAO's open access telescope allocation," said Chris Smith, director of the Cerro-Tololo Inter-American Observatory. "With it, we provide astronomers from all over the world a powerful new tool to explore the outstanding questions of our time, perhaps the most pressing of which is the nature of dark energy."
In December, after the camera is tested, it will begin the Dark Energy Survey, the largest galaxy survey ever undertaken, by mapping one-eighth of the sky. Researchers estimate the survey should spot 300 million galaxies, 100,000 galaxy clusters and 4,000 exploding stars, called supernovas.

French court backs UK royals on topless photos

NANTERRE, France (AP) — A French court ordered a magazine publisher to hand over all digital copies of topless photos of the Duchess of Cambridge within 24 hours and blocked further publication of what it called a "brutal display" of William and Kate's private moments.
Under the ruling Tuesday, the publisher of the French gossip magazine Closer faces a daily fine of €10,000 ($13,100) if it fails to hand over the photos featured in Friday's "world exclusive" issue of Prince William's wife Kate. The photos were taken without authorization during the royals' vacation at a private residence in southern France.
The court also handed out an injunction to stop Closer France from republishing the offending pictures — including on its website and its tablet app — as well as re-selling them.
A statement Tuesday from the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge said they "welcome the judge's ruling." Maud Sobel, a lawyer for the royal couple, described it as "a wonderful decision."
"We've been vindicated," Sobel said.
Although the decision was seen as a victory for the royals, it only affects the 14 partially clad snapshots of Kate that were in Friday's edition. It's unclear if Closer France possesses more pictures — but if they did they could technically go on and publish them, as the ruling has no power over that.
In any case, if the royal family had hoped to block international publication, it's already too late. An Italian publication "Chi," published dozens even more racy photos of the duchess in a 26-page spread. An Irish newspaper editor, meanwhile, was suspended after he chose to publish some of the topless photos in the "Independent Star."
Tuesday's ruling only affects the French magazine branch of Mondadori, Closer's publisher, which also faces a €2,000 ($2,600) fine.
"These snapshots which showed the intimacy of a couple, partially naked on the terrace of a private home, surrounded by a park several hundred meters from a public road, and being able to legitimately assume that they are protected from passers-by, are by nature particularly intrusive," the French ruling decreed. "(They) were thus subjected to this brutal display the moment the cover appeared."
The photos showed Kate relaxing at a private villa in Provence, in southern France, sometimes without her bikini top and, in one case, her suit bottom partially pulled down to apply sunscreen.
The case is the first of two parallel legal actions by the British royals. In a reflection of just how intent they are on protecting their privacy — and likely dissuading paparazzi from future ventures — St. James's Palace said family lawyers would be filing a criminal complaint against 'x' — the unnamed photographer who took the pictures.
The criminal lawsuit is thought to be aimed at flushing out the mystery photographer's name and — by targeting the source — allow the royal couple to stop the photos spreading further around the world. If the criminal case goes ahead, 'x' could face a large fine and up to one year in prison.
Christopher Mesnooh, an American lawyer who works in Paris, said French law strongly protects privacy rights but tabloids have their own reasons for publication, even when they might violate the law.
"It appears to give satisfaction entirely to the royal couple," Mesnooh said of Tuesday's ruling.
But he added the amount of damages is nowhere near enough to dissuade the publication of similar photos.
"Damages are no more than €50,000 ($65,270) under French law... If you sell 100,000 copies, you're ahead of the game," he noted.
The ruling listed the royal couple by their full names: William Arthur Philip Louis Mountbatten-Windsor and Catherine Elizabeth Middleton.

Afghan militants say blast that killed 12 was revenge for film

KABUL (Reuters) - Afghan militants claimed responsibility on Tuesday for a suicide bomb attack on a minivan carrying foreign workers that killed 12 people saying it was retaliation for a film mocking the Prophet Mohammad.
A short film made with private funds in the United States and posted on the Internet has ignited days of demonstrations in the Arab world, Africa, Asia and in some Western countries.
In a torrent of violence blamed on the film last week, the U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other Americans were killed in an attack in Benghazi and U.S. and other foreign embassies were stormed in cities in Asia, Africa and the Middle East by furious Muslims. At least nine other people were killed.
On Tuesday, a suicide bomber blew up a minivan near the airport in the Afghan capital and a spokesman for the Hezb-e-Islami insurgent group claimed responsibility.
"A woman wearing a suicide vest blew herself up in response to the anti-Islam video," said militant spokesman Zubair Sediqqi. Police said the woman may have been driving a Toyota Corolla car rigged with explosives, which she triggered.
But the claim will raise fears that anger over the film will feed into deteriorating security as the United States and other Western countries try to protect their forces from a rash of so-called insider attacks by Afghan colleagues.
Thousands of protesters clashed with police in Kabul the previous day, burning cars and hurling rocks at security forces in the worst outbreak of violence since February rioting over the inadvertent burning of Korans by U.S. soldiers.
The protesters in Kabul and several other Asian cities have vented their fury over the film at the United States, blaming it for what they see as an attack on Islam.
The outcry saddles U.S. President Barack Obama with an unexpected foreign policy headache as he campaigns for re-election in November, even though his administration has condemned the film as reprehensible and disgusting.
In response to the violence in Benghazi and elsewhere last week, the United States has sent ships, extra troops and special forces to protect U.S. interests and citizens in the Middle East, while a number of its embassies have evacuated staff and are on high alert for trouble.
Despite Obama's efforts early in his tenure to improve relations with the Arab and Muslim world, the violence adds to a host of problems including the continued U.S. military involvement in Afghanistan, Iran's nuclear program, the Syrian civil war and the fall-out from the Arab Spring revolts.
PROTESTS, BANS
The renewed protests on Monday dashed any hopes that the furor over the film might fade despite an appeal over the weekend from the senior cleric in Saudi Arabia, home to Islam's holiest shrines, for calm.
Afghan police said among the 12 dead in the Kabul bomb attack were eight Russians and South Africans, mostly working for a foreign air charter company named ACS Ltd.
It followed a bloody weekend during which six members of Afghanistan's NATO-led alliance, including four Americans, were killed in suspected insider attacks carried out by Afghans turning on their allies.
Protesters also took to the streets in Pakistan and Indonesia on Monday and thousands also marched in Beirut, where a Hezbollah leader accused U.S. spy agencies of being behind events that have unleashed a wave of anti-Western sentiment in the Muslim and Arab world.
Authorities in Bangladesh have blocked the YouTube website indefinitely to stop people seeing the video. Pakistan and Afghanistan have also blocked the site.
Iran has condemned the film as offensive and vowed to pursue those responsible for making it. Iranian officials have demanded the United States apologize to Muslims, saying the film is only the latest in a series of Western insults aimed at Islam's holy figures.
The identity of those directly responsible for the film remains unclear. Clips posted online since July have been attributed to a man named Sam Bacile, which two people connected with the film have said was probably an alias.
Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, 55, a Coptic Christian widely linked to the film in media reports, was questioned in California on Saturday by U.S. authorities investigating possible violations of his probation for a bank fraud conviction.

iPhone Thefts: ‘Apple Picking’ on the Rise

Cities across the country are on alert as officials warn of an uptick in stolen Apple products, dubbed “Apple picking.”
According to the Federal Communications Commission, 30-40 percent of robberies in several major cities involve cell phones, including 38 percent in Washington, D.C. and 40 percent in New York City.
Las Vegas police broke up two rings of cell phone thieves on September 6.
“What this started with, we had a normal report of a theft. Somebody stole someone’s cell phone,” said Bill Cassell of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Dept. “Our officers started investigating and realized there were a lot of other similar instances.”
The LVMPD connected these robberies because they all seemed to target similar victims.
“They were all targeting people in fast food restaurants, coffee shops, people walking on street,” Cassell said. “The victims all had a similar profile too. They were all focused on their cells phones, inattentive of their surroundings and looked like they wouldn’t put up a fight.”
The thieves, many of them juveniles, would either ask to borrow the victim’s cell phone and run off with it or simply grab it from their unsuspecting victims.
“We tracked down some of the individuals involved and in doing this, realized there were two groups of people doing the same crime the same way. But they weren’t associated,” said Cassell.
One of the groups was charged with 14 cell phone thefts. The other has been charged with seven thefts, but according to Officer Cassell, the investigation of 20-30 thefts is still on-going.
The recent increase in cell phone thefts has prompted action from both the government and major wireless carriers.
In April, FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski, along with Washington, D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray and U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., announced new initiatives to combat the thefts.
Genachowski announced the creation and implementation of a database to prevent the use of stolen smartphones. With this new system, which is expected to launch in the coming months, a cell phone user can report their device stolen and their carrier will block the device from being used.
Officials believe that the registry will cut cell phone thefts. Even more dangerous is the threat of stolen personal information stored on smartphones.
“That’s what we’re most worried about, the tremendous amount of information these people are stealing,” Cassell said.
Beyond monetary consequences, many people are injured or even killed during robberies.
Hwangbum Yang, 26, a chef at a restaurant in Manhattan’s Museum of Modern Art, was shot and killed during a cell phone robbery on his way home from work in April.
In 2011, 17-year-old Prince Watson was charged with the murder of Sally Katona-King, 68, when he shoved her down the stairs in an attempt to steal her iPhone, according to ABC Chicago affiliate WLS.
And device thefts are not limited to the street or coffee shops.
Last week, a California man was accused of driving his SUV through an Apple store in Temecula and stealing thousands of dollars worth of display items. The investigation is still on-going

App of the Week: YouTube for iOS Runs on iPhone, iPod

App Name: YouTube
Price: Free
Available Platforms: iOS (new iPhone App), iPod Touch, and Android
What does this app do? With this week’s announcement of Apple’s iPhone 5 and iOS 6, it’s fitting that Google should follow suit with something new too. It released YouTube in app form for the iPhone and iPod touch. (If you hadn’t heard, Apple will stop pre-loading Google Maps and YouTube in iOS 6.)
Developed by YouTube engineers, the latest app comes with thousands of more videos, according to a blog post by Andrey Doronichev, head of YouTube mobile.
Log in with your email account, and use a tab at in the upper left hand corner to toggle between the YouTube home feed and your own collection of channels. With one swipe to the left, you can view channels you subscribe to, or, if you are a newcomer, peruse the home feed, which you can adjust to show highlights or uploads only.
Tapping on a video will reveal a few familiar icons on the screen allowing you to like or dislike a video, and view it in full screen mode. You can also comment on or share your selection using Google+, Twitter, Facebook, or email.
Some additional functions allow you to add all of those “cute-cat-doing-funny-things” videos to playlists or favorites, and flag it to watch later.
Is it easy to set up? Yes. Although the app will not come built into iOS 6 as it did with previous versions of Apple’s operating software, the standalone version downloads in seconds. Log in with your email account and go!
Should I try it? When you think of online video sharing sites, likely you think of YouTube before anything else. The app’s channel guides, sharing capability and full screen mode make viewing videos on your mobile device effortless.
One drawback? Google now allows ads to appear on the screen. That aside, this is a very clean and easy-to-navigate app.

You Can Now Pre-Order the iPhone 5

If it is 3:01 a.m. ET or past that time, you can now pre-order the iPhone 5 from Apple, Verizon, AT&T, or Sprint’s websites. No matter where you shop, the 16GB model will start at $199 with a two-year contract. Apple will offer an unlocked version of the phone — one that isn’t tied to a carrier — for more money but it isn’t expected to go on sale today.
While it will be late at night for many, lots of people are expected to get up in the wee hours of the morning, fork over their credit card numbers and order the phones. The iPhone will actually ship to those who order in one week, on Friday, Sept. 21st.
The new phone, which was announced earlier this week, has a number of new features, including a larger 4-inch display, LTE, a faster processor, improved camera and a new design. You can check out our guide to the top new features here.
Even before the phone was announced, iPhone owners began to sell their phones on sites like Gazelle and Glyde. According to those sites, iPhone sales have been at an all-time high over the last few weeks as people prepared to buy the new phone. Analysts predict that Apple could sell as many as six to 10 million iPhone 5s before the end of September.
Apple and the cellular carriers will begin selling the phone in stores on Sept. 21st at 8 a.m. ET. And in typical Apple product launch fashion, lines are expected.

Google buys cybersecurity startup VirusTotal

(Reuters) - Google Inc has bought startup VirusTotal, picking up a fledgling but widely used cybersecurity industry player in a move that could beef up protection for its Internet services.

The acquisition of VirusTotal, which aggregates warnings on submitted files and websites from most antivirus solutions, including Intel Corp's McAfee and Symantec Corp, could significantly shore up the search giant's ability to weed out infectious content from Gmail, social network Google+ and even the pages it shows search users.

VirusTotal operates by accepting requests for virus checks, running every available protection software on the questioned document or pages, then distributing the results to security vendors.

Because those results include the documents and websites submitted, the service is considered a valuable source of information by the security industry about emergent threats and potential targets.

"VirusTotal will continue to operate independently, maintaining our partnerships with other antivirus companies and security experts," the startup said in a blogpost announcing the acquisition.

"We've worked hard to ensure that the services we offer continually improve. But as a small, resource-constrained company, that can sometimes be challenging."

Google did not disclose the amount it paid, and did not respond to requests for comment.

China's Alibaba to pass Amazon, eBay in transaction value: executive

(Reuters) - China's largest e-commerce firm, Alibaba Group, expects to sell merchandise this year worth more than that sold by Amazon Inc and eBay combined, Alibaba's chief strategy officer said on Saturday.

The company is aiming for 3 trillion yuan ($473 billion) in annual transaction value from its Taobao e-commerce units in the next 5 to 7 years, Zeng Ming told reporters.

Alibaba's founder, Jack Ma, said last year that Taobao's transaction value for 2012 would reach 1 trillion yuan. The company has not said what percentage of online sales come from Taobao, but it is the crown jewel of the Alibaba Group and its profit engine.

"From their annual reports we did a rough calculation and we were similar last year but we are growing faster than them this year, so this year we are probably larger than them," Zeng said of Amazon and eBay, America's top online retailer and auction site.

"The gap is just going to get bigger and bigger when we grow faster," he said.

In May, Alibaba ended more than two years of often fractious negotiations with Yahoo Inc to buy back much of a stake held by the U.S. web giant and, crucially, reduce the voting power of foreign stakeholders including Yahoo and Japan's Softbank Corp.

As part of the deal with Yahoo, there are incentives for Alibaba to list its shares by December 2015. The company has said there is no timetable for a listing. This year, Alibaba took its Alibaba.com unit private.

Apple sets September 12 event, latest iPhone expected

(Reuters) - Apple Inc distributed invitations to an event in San Francisco on September 12, setting the stage for what is widely expected to be the release of the iPhone 5.

The typically cryptic invitation said "It's almost here", sported a number 12 - corresponding to the date of the event - and cast a large shadow of the number 5, a clue that the fifth version of the popular smartphone could be in the pipeline.

Apple's iPhone launches are among the most-watched events on the tech industry calendar. The latest version of the company's main product -- generating more than half its revenue -- may sport a larger, higher-end screen, sources have said.

The new screen could measure 4 inches from corner to corner, one source has said, an increase from the 3.5-inch display that has been held constant since the smartphone began selling in 2007 and revolutionized the mobile industry.

Some analysts say the larger screen may be a response to rival Samsung Electronics, whose larger, Google Android phones have helped it become the world's biggest smartphone maker.

Speculation had also arisen in past months that the company might offer details about a smaller version of its iPad, but the emailed invitation offered no hint of that on Tuesday.

The event will take place at San Francisco's Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, the preferred venue for the unveiling of past products such as the iPad.

The new iPhone will hit store shelves in time for the crucial holiday season. Shares in the company edged 0.6 percent higher to $669.44.
